- Summary:
-
Solness,a photo journalist, speaks of his trip in July 1980 on a motorcycle heading to Cape York to discover and photograph the heartland of Australia. This trip provided the inspiration for his Tree stories project, where he started to look at the way Australian society as a whole relates to their trees. Solness recalls as a significant turning point in his career his being allowed to add commentary to his photographs while working for the National Times newspaper on two occasions during the 1980's. Solness recalls photographic projects such as photographs of environmental campaigners with their favourite trees; a trip to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to photograph the impact of industrial style rainforest logging in those islands.
- Biography/History:
-
Solness is known as one of the pioneers of modern photo-journalism in Australia. He was born at Waverley, NSW and spent his early childhood years at Bondi, NSW and Blakehurst, NSW. At 15 he brought an underwater camera & began the pursuit of surfing photography as a creative interest. His first published photograph was in Surfing World Magazine, March 1975. In 1983 permanent work came his way when Pictorial Editors of the Sydney Morning Herald spotted an article he had put together while on his motorcycle trip for GEO magazine.
