- Biography/History:

Worked for the Victorian government. Retired in 1893 from the position of Deputy Registrar-General. In private life a poet; member of a Melbourne literary coterie that included Adam Lindsay Gordon, Henry Kendall R.H. Horne and Marcus Clarke. In 1867 published 2 vols of verse. In 1873, published the long poem "The man in the iron mask." Father of poet & artist Hugh McCrae.
