Senja Robey discusses how her interest in aviation developed; working for DeHavilland's at Bankstown Airport; meeting Keith Robey, who was to become her flying instructor and later her husband; her memories of Brian 'Black Jack' Walker; Bankstown Airport in 1949; gaining her private licence and a commercial licence in late 1953 and in March 1962 taking up an instructor's rating; buying into a Cessna 182 which she operated commercially in aerial photography and charter; her connection with media and accidents for the photography; her work with photographers and some experiences; learning about the development of radar and of its place in air traffic control; knowing the air traffic controllers personally helped in gaining clearances; charter flights into bush sites with very basic airstrips and safety being a prime consideration always.
Robey speaks about the formation of the Australian Women's Pilots Association (AWPA) to foster good flying relationships with women and to assist them; the Regional Air Space Advisory Committee [RAPAC] work and it's relation to CASA; her appearance before a tribunal for Debbie Lawrie so that she could become an Ansett pilot and her success; her career; her link with the Phoenix Aero Club as an instructor and working with the Police for over 20 years; the Guild of Air Pilots; she discusses the preponderance of rules and regulations and the growth of bureaucracy; how aviation is pivotal to the growth of Australia; how training has altered and less is required today in terms of revision and recalls earlier training methods being more rigorous.
