Jim Hayes, born in Alice Springs, N.T., talks about his family's involvement in replacing wooden overland telegraph poles with metal; his schooling on Undoolya station and in town; station workers; childhood entertainment; chores; the population of Alice Springs at the end of WWII; working for his father from 1961; the changes in the cattle industry over his career; modernisation; Indigenous staff and track riders; the impact of introduction of 40 hour week, alcohol and wages on the Indigenous work force; cattle breeds on the family property; the lack of ticks in the area; sending cattle to market, age, numbers, transport; the reasons for changeover to mechanised transport on property since 1983; the prevalence of Indigofera, a plant poisonous to horses; stock feed; growth of tourism industry in Central Australia; the new Ghan railway; mustering methods, cattle handling, traditional skills; modernisation; the future of the cattle industry, live exports, local markets; flavour of different breeds; the Tennant Creek dividing line, exports north, local market south; how his sons are continuing the Hayes farming tradition.
