Four issues: Monday January the 22nd 1838 Melbourne, No 4 vol.1; Monday January the 29th 1838, No 5 vol 1; Monday February the 19th 1838 No. 8 vol 1; Monday February the 26th 1838, No 9 Vol 1. Four of the original nine manuscript issues of the first newspaper in Port Phillip, the Melbourne Advertiser. Written and published by John P. Fawkner. The first nine issues were published in manuscript because there was then no printing press in Port Phillip. Included in the collection is a letter from C.A. McCallum (Chief Librarian, Public Library of Victoria) to Mrs W.A.F. Rucker dated 21 June, 1948.

John Pascoe Fawkner came to Australia with his parents in 1803. He arrived at Port Phillip Settlement in 1835 and established a store and hotel. Three years later he published the Melbourne Advertiser.It ran for seventeen issues before being suppressed as illegal. In 1839 he published the "Port Phillip Patriot and Melbourne Advertiser" and in 1840 the "Geelong Advertiser". From 1851 until his death in 1869, Fawkner was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
