Paddy Fosh, born 1922, in Ireland talks about his early life there and in Australia; enlisting in the Army (WWII); returning to Australia in 1938; his war service in Java and the Middle East; life in the Forces; Army songs; his musical background; Bush school; his mother singing; leaving school at 14, working in furniture delivery and fur trade; his job in the army; the building trade; being a Union Rep; entering the Railways; being supportive of Unions; Ship yard disputes; his mother buying him an accordion before the war; not being able to read music; first music learnt; playing his accordion again after the war; starting a Folk Club in the Community Hall with the help of his wife; the Depression in Australia; men carrying swags, how his mother left food out for the swagmen; more on war service in New Guinea; 'The Gospel according to racing'; Pat Hanner; his French surname; music being part of our culture; Australian music not being played; getting lost in the bush (1927) and being rescued by members of an Aboriginal tribe (Manero Tribe); his Sergeant in the Army being Aboriginal; how the Tribal lands were taken away from them; more on songs from Troops which have not been recorded.
