Joe Jennings graduated from the University of Cambridge. He served in World War Two, mainly in Iceland, before joining the Department of Geography at the Australian National University in 1952 as Reader in Geomorphology. Jennings was President of the Institute of Australian Geographers, and in 1975 he was awarded the (W. B.) Clarke medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Victoria medal of the Royal Geographical Society, London. He was a founder (1956) and president (1958-60) of the Australian Speleological Federation. In 1983 the United States’ National Speleological Society made him an honorary life member. Jennings was a world authority on karstic landscapes and caves, being perhaps the first to publish on the so-called `syngenetic’ karsts of southern coastal Australia, and was noted for his work in surveying the limestone caves of Australia. His special interest was glacial geomorphology and through his studies of the Snowy Mountains, Tasmania and around Lake George, he greatly increased the academic understanding of past glaciations in the south of Australia. Jennings was also influential in the cave science and exploration of the Eastern Highlands, the Nullarbor and the Kimberley. As evidenced by this map collection, Jennings’ research covered Australia, the Territory of Papua and New Guinea, Malaysia, China, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America. He authored over two hundred publications. Retiring in 1977, Jennings was a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Biogeography and Geomorphology, of which he had been a foundation member, for the rest of his life.
- Notes:
-
- The collection comprises both published and unpublished diagrams, sketches, maps, photographs and prepublication proofs associated with Professor Jennings' works in the fields of geomorphology and speleology. The material is mainly Australian but includes a few items on the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, China, Asia, and New Zealand, France and Iran. The prepublication manuscript items are examples showing the progression of geologic mapping from on-site sketches and data sheets to the final published or pre-published form.
