Johnathon Yalandhu was born in Milingimbi in 1953. He went to Darwin to train as a carpenter when he was 17. He joined the Wanderers football club and won the club's best and fairest award in 1972/73. He played in Australian Aboriginal football carnivals in the 1980s against the likes of Robert Muir.
