- "Grainger's first setting of this haunting tune was done as a sixteen-year old student at the Frankfurt Hoch Conservatorium. The present arrangement is based upon the setting started about four years later (in 1902) and completed only a year prior to its publication in 1912 as No. 1 in the series: Settings of songs and tunes from William Chappell's "Old English popular music". The 1912 publication (London, Schott & Co. Ltd.) appeared as a vocal solo with two different accompaniments (for piano, or for violin, viola, 2 celli and harp) and bears a dedication to Grainger's longtime friend and fellow composer Roger Quilter."--Preface.
