The Commonwealth Government has commissioned this National Survey on Community Attitudes to Violence Against Women to establish a baseline of findings upon which to develop and measure future policies and interventions. The survey involved approximately 13,000 men and women from across Australia. This report presents the findings of the survey, which are grouped under the key themes of: defining and understanding violence against women; views about prevalence and seriousness; understanding of perpetrates and who is affected by violence; belief in explanations diminishing men's responsibility for violence; beliefs about responses to violence against women; preparedness to intervene in situations of domestic violence; factors that help to predict attitudes; and reach of media coverage and information. Results by gender, by age, from Indigenous people, and from people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are provided, as well as comparisons with results from the 1995 survey by the Office of the Status of Women, 'Community attitudes to violence against women'.
