- Summary:
-
Predicated on the assumption that many of the problems exhibited by learning disabled children arise from difficulties they have in processing information, the program of research described in this paper was undertaken to (1) identify reading comprehension difficulties that are due to disorders in the reader, and (2) design and test effective instruction for remediating those disorders. The paper describes in detail the methodology of three studies, along with the instruments developed to identify children for each study. After a discussion of methodological problems encountered in the research, the paper concludes that the work supports previous findings indicating the interactionist nature of reading and reading disability, specifically that text structure interacts with prior learning in both good and poor readers to affect comprehension.
