Intended primarily for use by Unicef colleagues working in program communication and training, this handbook gives a general overview of the "building blocks" needed for putting together the communication component of a development program. To do this, the handbook uses as an illustrative example the development of a communication strategy for an expanded program of immunization. Following introductory material, the handbook deals with the identification of audiences to be reached in an expanded program of immunization, an analysis of the constraints on the participation of different audiences, the selection of appropriate media for different groups and different purposes, and the overall communication strategy development. The handbook concludes with a summary of the main points of the advocated communication program approach and a glossary of terms used. Accompanying the handbook are reference materials drawn from actual communication/training situations that can be used in further briefing and training exercises, including materials on program communication, key questions on developing a program communication strategy, indicative and communication matrixes, monitoring and evaluation, and slide shows.
