Bill Northam was born in 1905 in England. A latecomer to sailing, he took up sailing at the age of 46 and won a gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics at the age of 59 in the 5.5-Metre class yacht Barranjoey which he commissioned in 1963. He became a celebrity in Japan where he was called Ogesan ('old man'). He was knighted in 1976 and died in 1988.
