The Dromedary Hotel, in Central Tilba was built in 1895 for Mr. & Mrs. Jim Livingstone as a coffee palace; hence the original name 'The Palace Hotel'. In 1946 when signboards were replaced, having been removed from buildings during World War Two, the hotel was renamed after nearby Mount Dromedary. The history of European settlement in this area begins with the sighting of this landmark by Captain James Cook on Saturday, 21st April, 1770 and so named by him on account of its resemblance to a dromedary's hump. Over the years the old hotel has been a favourite stopping-off place for travellers on the Far South Coast. For all its popularity with locals and visitors alike, the hotel still retains the homely and charming atmosphere of an old country pub. In 1975 Central Tilba was placed on the classified list in the National Trust register for its outstanding townscape quality.
James and Emma Livingstone were both born in NSW. Emma Livingstone, née Southam was born in Tilba Tilba in 1862.
