The Japanese print shows buddist 'kannon' deities of 33 selected temples printed in one sheet. The custom of pilgrimmage to 33 Kannon dieties became quite popular since 13th to 15th century in various places in Japan;and it flourished after 17th, in Edo Period, when the traffic systems and other social structures were established; this particular print is for 'Saigoku Sanjūsan-sho' pilgrim sites, known in English as 'Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage'.
