This Japanese export photo album filled with large hand-coloured albumen prints contains representation of people, life, and the architectural landscape of Meiji-era Japan. The album begins with an image of the Osaka Castle showing the Fushimi Yagura Watchtower later destroyed by fire, a number of images of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, many images devoted to the famed Nikko Tosho-gu Shinto shrine and temples, including the Spring Festival, Five-story Pagoda, the large Dutch Lantern presented to the Shogun in 1643, the Yomeimon Gate, and architectural details. There are also images in the album devoted to the surroundings and people in Meiji-era Japan, including Mr. S. Kajima’s Country Home, Japanese sailing junks, planting rice fields, unwrapping silk worms, Japanese women cooking dinner, women gathering fire wood, Shinto Priests, reeling silk, and fishing off a bridge. Many of the images appear to be by famed Yokohama Photo Studio of Baron Raimund von Stillfried and Hermann Anderson, who had acquired Beato’s stock when he left Japan in 1877, the sharp crisp image of the Daibatsu Great Buddha at Kamakura is nearly identical to a Felice Beato photo of the same period. Many of the photos are similar images to those which were shot and hand-coloured for export by Tamamura and Kusakabe in the 1890s, some of them having the same titles. The tipped-in photo on the front pastedown appears to be a large group of Chinese school children with possible Western missionary teachers sitting amongst them.
