An Exhibition which represents modern examples of the most ancient art known is currently on show at the University of Melbourne in the southern Australian state of Victoria. The exhibition is a collection of paintings on bark and stone from Groote Eylandt which is off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory. Although the oldest of the paintings are less than a century old they are similar in design, form and use of colour to the paintings done by the Aboriginals in Australia more than 10, 000 years ago. In their "stick" and skeletal approach to represetations of human and animal figures they relate to the oldest known cave paintings discovered in Europe and Africa. The exhibition was opened by Aboriginal artist, Mr Wanjuk Marika, from the Northern Territory"; "Part of the exhibition of bark and stone Aboriginal paintings on show at the University of Melbourne. The collection was made by Doctor Leonhad Adam, an eminent German-born anthropologist"; "Australian Information Service Photograph by Eric Wadsworth"; "Exhibition & shows"; "P73/612"; "10/7/73/5"
