Letters of Sir Josiah Symon to his daughter Leslie Kilmeny Symon from 1897 to 1933. Transcripts prepared by Elizabeth Dyer. The first few letters were written while Sir Josiah was attending the Federation Convention in Melbourne. Most of the others date from when Kilmeny and her sisters were touring/living in England and Europe, while Sir Josiah was living at Manoah in South Australia. There is a photocopied newspaper article about a dedication service at St Mary's Church, Echunga dated 1 June 1955, from the Mount Barker Courier. The collection also includes letters from Charles Symon, 10/2/1917; from Lenore Symon, 8/11/1916; and to Angel Symon, 31/3/1971; together with galley proofs and handwritten notes for Josiah Symon's book 'Shakespeare the Englishman' (1 box).
- Biography/History:

Sir Josiah Symon, lawyer, politician and philanthropist, emigrated to South Australia from Scotland in 1866. He was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1871 where he practised until 1923. In 1881 he entered state politics and from 1887 onwards became a strong supporter for Federation working as president of both the South Australian Federal League and the Commonwealth League and a member of the Australasian Federal Convention (1897-1898). Following Federation he was elected to the Senate in the new Federal Parliament where he served until 1913.
Elizabeth Symon Dyer is a granddaughter of Sir Josiah Symon and author of The bank manager and his family (2012).
