-
- "First published by Constable, then by the St. Catherine Press, and later by the Oxford University Press for the University of London, Institute of Historical Research."
- "Many volumes reprinted by Dawson (Folkstone, Kent)"
- A county-by-county history and topography of England. The initial volumes in each county set cover the natural history, archaeology, political, religious and educational history at a county level, including the Domesday survey. Subsequent volumes for each county give historical details of each parish, arranged alphabetically by hundred, wapentake or rape.
- Initial plans for a large-format genealogical volume for each county, giving the pedigrees of county families, were later dropped after only the Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire volumes had been published (1906-1907).
- Counties with complete coverage (as of 2021) are Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Lancashire, Rutland, Surrey, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire (county set), and the West Riding of Yorkshire.
- As of 2021, no volumes have been published for the counties of Northumberland, Westmorland or the West Riding of Yorkshire.
- The VCH began work in Northumberland in the early years of the 20th century, but did not continue after the First World War partly because the county already had an excellent, locally produced, history, the 11-vol. "History of Northumberland" produced 1893-1940 by the Northumberland County History Committee.
- Series also known at the Victoria County History (VCH), and popularly as the "Red books".
