The collection comprises correspondence, photographs, publications and manuscripts, an early note book, sketch book, a handmade children’s book, an illustrated autograph book and newspaper cuttings. The letters, mainly written during World War II, that include letters from the poet, writer and editor Nancy Keesing and journalist, travel writer and novelist Ernestine Hill, provide insights into life in 1940s Sydney and include references to the Sydney Short Story Club of which Gertrude and Nancy were active members.

Gertrude Alice Scarlett nee Peir, was born in Sydney on 29 November 1886, the daughter of Henrietta Letitia Elizabeth Peir and Herbert Henry Lee, a son of Thomas and Fanny Lee of Kelso, NSW. Scarlett studied art at Sydney Technical College, Ultimo and her teachers included artists Alfred Coffey and Syd Long. She married Robert Dalley Scarlett, musician and composer on 8 September 1909 and had two sons, Grahame Yorke Dalley, (born Sydney 1910) and Hubert St Pierre Bach (born Grafton 1914). Scarlett wrote for a range of publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, Smiths Weekly, The Bulletin and the Womans Mirror, as well as plays for stage and radio, radio comedy sketches and supplied ideas for the comic strips drawn amongst others by Stan Cross.
