Annotation. Cecil 'Boxer' Kroehnert's magnificent morticed post and rail fences and sturdy stockyards can be found on many historic properties from Yulgilbar on the Clarence River to Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsular. Growing up in Sydney Boxer had many and varied jobs and by 1937 was achieving success as a competitive axeman, with an outstanding win at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. With work in short supply during the Great Depression Boxer and his brother Ted set out to find work timber-cutting and bridge-building in the border ranges between NSW and QLD. He learned how to work timber and how to select the right timber for each particular use. After WW2 Boxer returned to Sydney and eventually commenced his long career in stockyard and fence building. His craftsmanship was much admired and he was persuaded to move to the Clarence River where he made his indelible mark on Gordonbrook and Yulgilbar stations, two historic cattle properties north of Grafton. Thus began a long and cherished friendship with the Myer family who own Yulgilbar and Elgee Park, their winery on the Mornington Peninsular. As Boxer grew older his projects became more ambitious, and he produced some of his most outstanding building work in his later years - working until well into his eighties. His four sons and later his grandsons learned the craft at his side and today a Kroehnert post and rail fence is a timeless addition to many historic and contemporary properties. This book was written by his five surviving children and gives a deep insight into Boxer the axeman, builder and father. His was a long life well lived.
