The collection comprises papers relating to the Franklin River Blockade, a protest against a decision by the Tasmanian Government to dam the Franklin River to generate hydro-electricity. The protest was coordinated by the Tasmanian Wilderness Society (TWS). The papers are a personal record of the campaign and include trainer materials on facilitation and consensus decision making detailing the internal politics of the campaign, reports, handbooks and information leaflets, meeting notes and agendas, ephemera, pictures, and personal correspondence between family, and campaigners throughout the blockade.
- Biography/History:
-
Christine Fraser was an environmental activist involved with the Tasmanian Wilderness Society during the 1982-1983 Gordon-Below-Franklin River Blockade. The blockade was part of a campaign that became a landmark event in civil action, promoting the rise of the Australian conservation movement and setting an example for future environmental campaigns in Australia. The political success of the environmental groups involved led to the formation of The Greens, Australia’s third most popular political party. The Franklin Dam or Gordon-Below-Franklin Dam project was a proposed dam on the Gordon River in Tasmania, Australia, that was never constructed. The movement that eventually led to the project's cancellation became one of the most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history.
