McCrudden speaks about his Catholic family who emigrated to Australia when he was 9 years old. His father was employed at the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission and they moved to various country towns. At age 17, his family moved to Sydney, where they adopted a 2-year-old Aboriginal child from Yarra Bay, an institution near La Perouse. McCrudden graduated as a solicitor in 1964 and specialised in criminal law before joining the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) in Nowra. He talks at length about his work with Nowra ALS over the period 1979-97; expresses his views on the removal of Aboriginal children; and describes changes over time in Aboriginal relations with police and changes in attitudes towards Aboriginal people.
