Between 1928 and 1935 Scullin was federal leader of the Labour Party. He was Prime Minister between 1929 and 1932, during the Depression years. While he was Prime Minister Scullin held the portfolios for external affairs, industry and the treasury. He represented Australia at the Imperial Conference in 1930. After being Prime Minister Scullin stayed in Parliament for 17 years and was an adviser to the governments of John Curtin and Ben Chifley.
