Summary

MS 9180 comprises the correspondence and papers of Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, her family, friends and supporters. The early series contain the correspondence and files of the Chamberlain and Murchison families, divided into ordinary and special files. The ordinary files contain correspondence received from family, friends and the Australian public, 1980-1996, and include letters, cards, notes, verses, photographs, telegrams, newsletters, books and drawings. The special files also contain correspondence, besides a wide variety of other materials relating to the inquests, the trial, imprisonment and eventual release of Lindy Chamberlain. Also included are twelve smaller collections of correspondence and newspaper cuttings, as well as the papers of the Chamberlain Information Service. There is also an extensive sequence of material relating to Lindy Chamberlain's autobiography titled Through my eyes, published in 1990. This includes annotated drafts, galley proofs, computer disks, cassette tapes, tape transcripts and memorabilia from the book launch and the promotional tours that followed (174 boxes, 1 carton, 5 fol. boxes).

The MS Acc09.079 instalment comprises draft scripts, galleys, and related correspondence for Through my eyes (autobiography and television mini-series); and, periodicals, leadership training materials, camp programs and clipping files for Pathfinders (young people's organisation sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church) in which Chamberlain-Creighton was a leader for over 25 years (7 boxes).

The Acc10.091 instalment comprises correspondence, ephemera, newsletters, signed publications, drafts of television scripts for Through my eyes, media interview transcripts, script and notes for opera "Lindy", family papers, various publications and a copy of a thesis concerning Lindy Chamberlain. These papers have been organised by the donor into separate groups according to who they relate to or were accumulated by, including the Azaria Information Service (AIS), Chamberlain-Creighton herself, Chamberlain-Creighton and second husband Rick Creighton, first husband Michael Chamberlain, children Aidan, Reagan and Kahlia, and late parents Cliff and Avis Murchison. The correspondents include friends, family, church and support groups, the media, legal bodies, politicians, and anonymous members of the public. The ephemera mostly relates to Chamberlain-Creighton's public appearances, including book signings, media interviews and speaking engagements. There is also a small amount of material from family events (18 boxes, 1 fol. box).

Biography/History

On 17 August 1980, Alice Lynne (Lindy) Chamberlain was camping with her husband, Michael, and children at the Ayer's Rock camping ground when her youngest child, Azaria, disappeared from the family tent. Lindy Chamberlain was subsequently convicted of the murder of her daughter and sentenced to life imprisonment. The case attracted wide media coverage and public interest, both within Australia and overseas. All convictions against Lindy and Michael Chamberlain were finally quashed on 15 September 1988.
