1. “Transcript of the diary kept by Harry Hughes, being a record of his time spent in Fiji between the years 1875-1878 (and with some references to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne). The diary records Hughes’s boat trip from England to Australia to Fiji, his day-to day life there, his work with Dr Mayo, various aspects of Fijian cultural & political life at this time and his return to England via Australia in 1878; notable references include an encounter with a shipwrecked sailor who had lived with Indigenous Australians for 17 years, the Fijian measles epidemic, meeting Seru Epenisa Cakobau, an influential Fijian Warlord of the time; numerous impressions of late 19th century Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne” -- Gotcha By The Books, selection list 25/02/2013

Biography/History

" Henry John Hughes, a native of Oxford, England and an employee at New College in that city. Dr Mayo invited him to go to Fiji as his personal servant which he did. When he returned to England he remained a servant at New College for about 50 years, becoming a Freeman of the City of Oxford. He retained his interest in the Fiji islands, giving many lectures and wrote several articles on the subject. Extracts from his diary were broadcast in the Overseas section of the BBC about a year after his death in 1944." -- Sidney West, handwritten note in Hughes diary.
