Image of the King : a parent's story of mentally handicapped children / June Epstein ; foreword by Rosemary and Gunnar Dybwad

June Epstein (Guest) wrote this book in 1970, reflecting upon her experiences of mothering her "mentally handicapped" son, Carey, born in 1952. Epstein eventually decided to have Carey institutionalised in Kew Cottages. In 1957, Epstein was instrumental in the foundation of the Kew Cottages Parents' Association. The chapters on Carey are fairly standard stuff, but later chapters on the "Parents" are very revealing. Her papers are held by the library, and a diary she kept before sending Carey to the Cottages is an interesting counter-view to this book.

Stanley Porteus is a fascinating man, who worked closely with Richard Berry, and later at Vineland Training Institute in New Jersey (incidentally, the institution to which Pearl Buck's daughter Carol was committed).
