 Summer Opening Hours:

Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

Introducing our catalogue

This catalogue is a next-generation library system powered by VuFind, a freely available library resource portal. It provides much better searching combined with other features found in modern web applications to make our resources easier to discover and request.


The new catalogue allows you to do all the searching you are currently used to, along with a variety of new features that aim to simplify your search process and increase the validity and usefulness of your results:

  • New-look streamlined interface
  • Relevance-ranked search to save you wading through pages of search results.
  • Clustered search results to allow you to refine your search and explore our collections.
  • Simplified callslip form and history, making it easy to request items from our collection and monitor your requests.
  • Integration with our digital collections to allow you to view items online where available.
  • Comments, allowing you to see what others thought of items in our collection, and for you to leave your own note.
  • Integration with other services/resources, such as Wikipedia, Google Books, LibraryThing.
  • RSS feeds, easy citations.
