Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize, archive and distribute cultural works. Founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. Wherever possible, the releases are available in plain text, but other formats are included, such as HTML, PDF and Plucker. Most releases are in the English language, but many non-English works are also available. There are multiple affiliated projects that are providing additional content, including regional and language-specific works. More information is available at

Hathi Trust

HathiTrust makes the public domain digitized collections of some of the great research libraries of the United States available for all. HathiTrust was initially conceived as a collaboration of the thirteen universities of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, the University of California system, and the University of Virginia to establish a repository for those universities to archive and share their digitized collections. All content to date has been supplied by the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin, both leaders in mass digitization efforts. The University of California, the University of Virginia, Indiana University and Purdue University will soon be contributing their digital materials. More information is available at

Open Library

Open Library is a project to draw together bibliographic information about books from sources such as libraries, booksellers and publishers. In addition to these metadata records, it includes the full-text of over 1 million books, mostly from the Internet Archive's Open-Access Text Archive More information about Open Library is available at
