Notes

Published anonymously. Attributed to Alexander Dalrymple.

Also bound in, at back, a general chart, exhibiting the discoveries made by Capt. James Cook... [London], 1784.

No more published.

The Chart of the South Pacifick Ocean, Pointing out the Discoveries made therein Previous to 1764, shows the track of early explorers including Louis de Vaez de Torres. The track of Torres' voyage clearly shows him traversing what is now known as Torres Strait, although Dalrymple does not provide any information to support this assertion in this book. The evidence had come from his study of original documents and charts by Torres taken by the British from the Spanish archives after their capture of Manila in 1762. James Cook was aware of this information before he sailed on the Endeavour.
