Papers relate to the 1947 Papua New Guinea Nutrition Survey Expedition. They include letters, notes, newspaper cuttings, related articles, a 1949 report consisting of typed and roneoed sections, and the 1950 published report, of the Expedition, permits and mess and ration accounts. There are also papers relating to Langley's experiences in Africa and her work for the South Pacific Health Service from 1950 to 1953. They include reports of nutrition surveys in the South Pacific, most by Doreen Langley or her fellow nutritionist Susan Holmes, letters, photographs and negatives, articles, memorabilia of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and visit to Fiji and press cuttings. There are also reminiscences of her experiences, together with some commentary on contemporary events, in Fiji, Niue and Tonga, written in the late 1980's or early 1990's, papers relating to a 1970 visit to New Guinea, an address book, an article on thyroid research in Tasmania and a leaflet supporting a treaty with Aboriginal peoples.

Doreen Langley graduated from the University of Melbourne with a BSc in biochemistry and bacteriology. She began working at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and then went to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. She went back to Melbourne to be a dietitian at the 4th General US Army Hospital. After further study of nutrition Langley went to Papua New Guinea in 1947 as one of two women in a team of eight Australian scientists undertaking a survey of nutrition and the production, preparation and storage of food. She travelled to Gambia in 1950 with the British Medical Research Council Nutrition Unit and to Fiji, Niue and Tonga with the South Pacific Health Service, 1951-1954, collecting data concerning heights, weights and general nutritional status; family meals, local foods recipes and customs regarding food. Ms Langley was Principal of the Women's College at the University of Sydney from 1957 till 1974.
