Biography/History

Born in Randwick, N.S.W., Lord May has had a distinguished scientific career, firstly as a physicist, and then as an ecologist, and has held academic posts at Harvard, Princeton, Sydney and Oxford Universities. He was Chief Scientific Advisor to the U.K. Government, 1995-2000, and head of the Office of Science and Technology. At the time of interview he was President of the Royal Society and held a Professorship jointly in the Dept. of Zoology, Oxford University and at Imperial College, London, as well as being a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1979, Australian Academy of Sciences as an Overseas Fellow in 1991, Academia Europaea in 1994, and (as a foreign member) to the US National Academy of Sciences in 1992.
