Summary

MS 6021 comprises correspondence with fellow writers including Viv Cunnington, Rosemary Dobson, Xavier Herbert, A.D. Hope, Guy Howarth, Douglas Stewart, John Thompson, Val Vallis and Judith Wright, and papers relating to most facets of Rowbotham's life and career. Included are drafts of most of his published and unpublished works, speeches, articles, lectures, notebooks, diaries and photographs. There is a large amount of printed matter relating to his career as a theatre critic (80 boxes, 7 folio boxes, 1 phase box)

The Acc97.044 instalment comprises drafts, discs, press cuttings and other printed matter, diaries and notebooks, correspondence and family history material (10 cartons, 1 folio box, 1 elephant folio, 2 digital carrier boxes).

The Acc03.212 instalment includes signed copies of The ebony gates: new and wayside poems (1996) and Poems for America: new poems (2002). There are also a list of titles by Rowbotham, an obituary, awards and achievements, Antipodes article and reviews (1 packet).

The Acc03.275 instalment includes drafts of "Mightly like a harp", "By the Mississippi dreaming", "The Pacific star", "The revenge of Carthage", "The English offensive", "More powerful than the living" and "By the fountains of the Asphodel". Also, issue of The Australian book review section featuring Rowbotham, 25-26 October, 2003 (3 boxes).

The Acc04.078 instalment consists of "The revenge of Carthage: new poems", "By the Mississippi dreaming: a fabulous history", "When the town was motherland", "The Toowoomba memoir", "Poems for America", "Death at Maiden Rock: the Mississippi memoir", "The battle of the shadows: the Brisbane memoir". In addition, typescripts of correspondence with Bruce Beaver, Tom Shapcott, Alan Rix, Michael Costigan, David Malouf and others. Also, original cards and other correspondence (1 box, 1 carton).

The Acc06.060 instalment comprises correspondence, drafts of poems, notes, newsletters, magazines, news cuttings, personal documents and other related material (7 boxes).

The Acc06.129 instalment includes two copies of The star of Englemeer (2006) (1 folder).

The Acc07.087 instalment consists of a copy of The star of Englemeer (2006) and two copies of Rogue moons (2007) (1 folder).

The Acc09.105 instalment comprises four published booklets of Rowbotham's poems, all written in his eighties: The cave in the sky: poems at eighty (2005), "The brown island and other poems", in Wagtail 46 (2005), The star of Englemeer (2006), and Rogue moons (2007) (1 packet).

The Acc09.138 instalment includes typescripts of various collections of poetry, memoirs, and short stories, including The rainbow farm, By the Mississippi dreaming, The garrison of gargoyles, and The English offensive; correspondence; certificates of membership of professional bodies such as the Australian Society of Authors; certificates of awards including Member of Order of Australia; ephemera including theatre programs; back issues of journals such as Theatre Australia (18 boxes).

The Acc11.148 instalment comprises experimental poetry drafts. It also contains newspaper clippings and printouts of websites pertaining to Rowbotham's work (1 box).

Biography/History

Author, journalist and poet. Born in Toowoomba, Queensland, David Harold Rowbotham lived most of his life in Queensland. Most of Rowbotham's journalistic career was with the Brisbane Courier-mail, where he worked as arts editor. He was senior tutor in English at the University of Queensland between 1965 and 1969. Rowbotham's published works include Ploughman and poet (1954), Town and city: tales and sketches (1956), Inland: poems (1958), The man in the jungle (1964), All the room (1964), Bungalow and hurricane: new poems (1967), The makers of the ark: poems (1970), and, The pen of feathers: poems (1971). Rowbotham was a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and an Emeritus Fellow of Australian Literature. He died in Brisbane in 2010.
