Summary

MS 5248 comprises correspondence, research notes, draft manuscripts, photographs and secondary source material chiefly related to John La Nauze's published studies: Alfred Deakin: a biography (1965), The making of the Australian constitution (1972), Walter Murdoch and Alfred Deakin on "books and men": letters and comments, 1900-1918 (1974), and Walter Murdoch: a biographical memoir (1977). The papers include sequences of original correspondence with fellow historians, including C.E.W. Bean, Manning Clark, Fred Alexander, W.K. Hancock and R.M. Crawford and prominent Australians such as H.C. Coombs, Paul Hasluck and A.D. Hope (105 boxes, 2 cartons, 4 fol. boxes).

The Acc05.078 instalment comprises photographs, mainly family photographs, ca. 1927-1978, correspondence, ca. 1938-1979, newspaper cuttings, ca. 1978-1979, two indexes to pamphlets and periodicals, book reviews of The making of the Australian Constitution, publications and maps mainly of cities in Europe, booklets and other information relating to Harvard University, ca. 1978, pocket diaries, small box of photographic negatives, research notes, theatre programs, personal financial documents such as bank savings books, cheques and list of shares (12 boxes).

The Acc05.082 instalment comprises notes from manuscript and printed sources, draft articles, book chapters and chronologies for a proposed book by La Nauze on Australian tariffs in the nineteenth century (4 boxes).

The Acc13.199 instalment comprises The economic and political development of Victoria 1877-1881 by J.E. Parnaby, PhD thesis, University of Melbourne, 1951; several other items relating to Andrew Lang, C.L. Crisp and 3 printed pamphlets from the Petherick Collection (1 volume).

Biography/History

John La Nauze was born on 9 June 1911 and was educated at the Perth Modern School and at the University of Western Australia. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1931 and graduated from Oxford University with a first class honours degree in economic and political history. After returning to Australia he took up various appointments at Adelaide and Sydney Universities, and at the University of Melbourne, 1956-1965, before joining the staff of the Australian National University as Professor of History, Institute of Advanced Studies in 1966. In addition to the titles mentioned above, he published two other major works, the Political economy in Australia (1949) and The Hopetoun blunder (1957). La Nauze died in Canberra in 1990.
