- Biography/History:
-
Politician and company director. Edward Granville Theodore was born in Adelaide in 1884. He attended school to the age of 12 and then worked in various occupations around Australia. In Queensland, he became involved with the organisation of workers in the Chillagoe-Irvinebank district, and, in 1907, helped to form the Amalgamated Workers Association of North Queensland. In 1913, the AWA was amalgamated with the Australian Workers' Union and Theodore became State president. He proceeded to enter political life and in 1909 won for Labor the seat of Woothakata (later Chillagoe) in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. In 1919 he became premier of Queensland. Theodore gave up the premiership in 1925 and entered federal Parliament as the ALP member for the Sydney seat of Dalley, 1927-1931. Between 1929 and 1931 he was deputy leader of the Australian Labor Party. Theodore became deputy prime minister and was treasurer in the Labor governments of 1929-1930 and 1931. Following his defeat in the 1931 federal election, Theodore concentrated on his business interests which included directorships of mining ventures in Australia and Fiji and the chairmanship of Consolidated Press Ltd. Theodore died in Sydney in 1950.
