Coleman was born in Dubbo, N.S.W. 1933. She recalls her family background, parents emigrating from Scotland in 1904; that her father had worked all his life on the New South Wales railways, the family moving frequently; being educated in a variety of New South Wales country towns; as a student of arts and social work at Sydney University from 1950, becoming involved in a number of clubs and societies; working as a cadet journalist before travelling overseas from 1955-1957. Coleman speaks on a number of issues; her family's experiences of World War II; her role in the public debates on health insurance, welfare and childcare during the 1960s and 1970s; her administrative & policy development roles within various statutory authorities established by governments to administer health and social welfare policies.

Marie Coleman, journalist/consultant worked first as Senior Medical Social Worker, Preston and Community Hospital and then with the Asthma Foundation; in 1969 Director of the Victorian Council of Social Services; in 1972 Chair of the National Social Welfare Commission; from 1976-1982 Director of the Office of Child Care in the Dept. of Social Security, and Special Adviser in the Social Welfare Policy Secretariat from 1982-1987; from 1986-1990 First Assistant Secretary, Policy Development Division, Commonwealth Dept. of Community Services and Health, Director of the National Foundation of Australian Women and worked with the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia; between 1991-1993 Visiting Fellow at the Australia-New Zealand Studies Centre, Pennsylvania, and then Acting Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies; in 1994 resumed her position as First Assistant Secretary in the Dept. of Human Services and Health until her retirement in 1995.
