Summary

Simon, one of the Biripi people, speaks about his childhood on Purfleet Mission, N.S.W. He was removed at the age of 8 with his younger brothers and placed at Kinchela Boys Home in Kempsey. He describes the harsh living conditions at Kinchela. Simon left Kinchela at the age of 16 to work. When he was about 19, he was reunited with his mother, but their relationship was difficult to re-establish. He later became a Christian and began working with prisoners. He is currently an assistant pastor with the Anglican Diocese in Redfern and with the Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ. He also works for the Baptist Inner Cities Ministries providing meals to people on the streets in the Kings Cross area. Simon talks about the long-term effects of removal and the harsh treatment at Kinchela upon his brothers and himself.
