Scrivener, a university library administrator, speaks of his birthplace, New Zealand and upbringing as a Seventh Day Adventist, how he became a high school teacher in the mid-1950s for the period of 6 year bond with Dept. of Education, his decision to pursue librarianship, his appointment without library practice or qualifications by Dietrich Borchardt to the University of Tasmania Library as an acquisitions librarian in 1958, how librarianship has remained a female dominated profession but university libraries tend to have the highest concentration of males especially in administration, his view of Dietrich Borchardt as scholar librarian and his aim to get librarians academic status, his pursuit of both professional library qualifications and an honours degree, the problems of organising library work around scholar librarians, library specialisations as dead-ends in the library field, how infrequent library work by subject specialisation is in Australia, the need to publish in librarianship, Borchardt's relationship with John Metcalfe.
