He recalls the work done on the design and staffing of the NLA' s Conservation Laboratory; contacts made with other conservators; the beginnings of the AICCM; the development of the training program at the University of Canberra; Artlab; AusHeritage; Heritage Collections Council (HCC).

Ian Cook was born in Sydney 1947. Cook was appointed by the National Library of Australia (NLA) in 1965 to train as its first Conservator. He started work in the NLA in 1969 & gradually established & developed the Conservation section of the Library. He was one of the key figures in establishing the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) and a member of the team that fought for the introduction of the Materials Conservation courses at the Canberra College of Advanced Education (CCAE and later University of Canberra). He left the Library in 1985 to head the State Conservation Centre in South Australia, that later became Artlab Australia. He also played key roles in the conservation component of the Heritage Collections Council and AusHeritage, a government initiated program to export the heritage industry.
