MS 2412 is organised into two sequences of boxes with additional consignments. The original consignments (MS 2412 Boxes 1-417 (Sequence 1)) are organised into 11 series. The next consignments (MS 2412, Boxes 1-512 (Sequence 2)) are organised into 37 series and the later consignments with their own numbering. The papers include correspondence, financial records, constitutional records, policy statements, council minutes, records concerning relations with other Australian universities and international bodies, conference records, student publications and photographs. The collection also includes papers concerning the history of the National Union of Australian University Students, the White Australia policy and government scholarships (929 boxes, 4 fol. boxes, 1 map folio).
The Acc GB 1992.1505 instalment comprises records of the Australian Union of Students accumulated during the early 1970s, including material relating to Neil McLean's tenure as president of the AUS during 1973-1974 (26 boxes).
The Acc97.156 instalment comprises records covering the period from ca. 1974 to 1988 (21 boxes, 2 folio boxes).
The Acc01.167 instalment comprises conference and seminar papers, journal issues including New Zealand student newspapers, material relating to the Melbourne Council for Overseas Students, council and committee papers, films, audiotapes and posters (6 boxes, 1 folio box).
The Acc03.232 instalment comprises records dating from 1969 to 1991 including correspondence, subject files, newsletters and ephemera, pertaining to the themes of indigenous issues and international networks (10 boxes).
The Acc04.015 instalment mostly comprises newsletters (11 boxes).
The Acc13.175 instalment comprises annual council reports including guide to council, agenda, motions on notice, officer reports, committee reports, and position papers from 1977-1978 (1 box).
The Acc22.050 instalment comprises material relating to AUS Student Travel and its eventual sale; compulsory student unionism; AUS secessionism; council papers and student trips to China and India. The majority of the material covers 1960-1982 (4 boxes, 1 folio box and 54 pieces).

The Australian Union of Students grew out of the National Union of Australian University Students which was set up in 1936, and, in 1987, was succeeded by the National Union of Students as the peak representative body for Australian university students.
