Summary

Undated catalogue of Aboriginal artefacts from Kaparlgoo Mission listing English and Aboriginal names and the uses of each article.

Biography/History

Kaparlgoo Mission, on the South Alligator River in the Northern Territory, was founded on 25 November 1899 by Anglican missionaries, Andrew Hunter Lennox and A. M. Gathercole. The missionaries were supported by two Church of England parishes in Adelaide. This was the first Anglican mission in the Northern Territory. The mission was planned as an 'industrial mission' and anticipated that Aborigines would take up gardening and other enterprises integrated with the settler economy. The mission seems to have been abandoned towards the end of 1906.
