Louis Jules Matras was born in about 1852, possibly in France. He is first recorded in Australia in July 1871 as an assistant master of the Kings School, Paramatta (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13241345). By June 1872 he had moved to Yass Grammar School, which described him as a graduate of the University of Paris (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104089862). Robert Lehane, "A Frenchman in Yass," Boongaroon (Yass & District Historical Society), vol. 19, no. 4 (December 2003), pages 3-6, covers Matras' time in Yass, which came to an end before April 1873, after his employer left his wife and debts and, according to Rose Paterson (Banjo's mother), "ran away with an actress (or some such)," leaving Matras £35 out of pocket (he was paid £10 a month). Matras then moved on to Wagga Wagga, where in July 1874 he launched legal action for unpaid wages against his recent employer, the town's sugar works (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article104115852, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article145065189). He is first recorded in the Moama / Echuca area in 1889, when he got into trouble for riding his bicycle or tricycle on the footpath (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article114673625; http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article114673665). In 1890 he played his organ at the Moama Cake and Apron Fair (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article114680623), but by 1891 he had moved to Coburg, where he placed a newspaper advertisement offering a reward of 10 shillings after he lost a silver-stemmed pipe (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article66898763). In 1896 Matras played an organ he constructed himself at the Easter Fair in the Exhibition Building in Melbourne (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article193972036). He died in 1898 in Fitzroy, Victoria, aged 46.
Mackay & Foyster was a partnership formed in 1885 by the newspaper proprietor and politician Angus Mackay (1824-1886) and the printer and journalist Robert George Foyster (1833-1916) to publish the Riverine Herald (Echuca, Vic. & Moama, NSW).
