In 1995 Helen Demidenko received the Miles Franklin Award for her novel The Hand that signed the paper'. The book was about the Holocaust from the perspective of Ukrainians and based according to the author, on information gained from her Ukrainian family. Within weeks an immense literary scandal errupted. Demidenko was revealed to be Helen Darville, who had no Ukrainian heritage. This cartoon was featured in The Age on Saturday 6th January 1996.
