Member for the Tasmanian seat of Bass in the House of Representatives from 1939 until defeated in 1949. President of the Launceston Trades Hall Council. One of the founders of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive enginemen. In 1933 state president of the ALP. Appointed Minister for Repatriation in 1946.
