Johns, a sleeper cutter, speaks of life in early twentieth century Australia when the main mode of transportation was trains; of starting work in 1924 at 14 years of age as a sleeper cutter in the Pilliga Forest of north central New South Wales (NSW), cutting the big ironbark trees for the railway lines coming through from Coonabarabran; the transportation used to cart sleepers; making a good wage during the boom times; what tools he worked with and how to care for them; life in the bush working 6 days per week; the social life & amenities available from the nearest town, Gwabegar; learning how to survive on "bush tucker"; the effects of the Depression in the late 1920s to early 1930s; work accidents suffered throughout his working life carting sleepers, hauling wool and hay; being under doctor's orders to stop work as a cutter at 36 years of age; the Pilliga Forest, how he had seen the forest at it's best in the early years and that by 1996 the big ironbarks and cypress pines had gone and in 1997 the forest had been burnt by massive bushfires.
