- Summary:
-
Australienation draws on three decades of John Ogden's photographic work in Australia - from the election of Gough Whitlam in 1972 and the beginnings of land rights to the new millennium and John Howard's inability to say sorry in an era of reconciliation. The photographs are Ogden's personal comments on a time that has seen the end of free love and the arrival of economic rationalism. Everyday life rather than grand events inspires Ogden's work. The Australian landscape, people in that landscape, and the experience of Aboriginal people are familiar subjects in Australian art, writing and photography. Ogden tackles them again here, with a provocative combination of directness, humanitarianism and humour.
