-
Douglas "Dick" Perry, a forester, speaks of migrating to Australia in 1912 when he was a 10 year old child; his father's job in England as a horse coachman and the skills he passed on to Perry; his mother being a keen naturalist had a great influence on Perry's early fascination with the Australian bush; how in 1917 he was interviewed for an apprenticeship position with the then Woods & Forests Dept. by the newly appointed Head, Englishman Charles Lane Poole, who was to become a legendary figure in Australian Forestry. He recalls Jack Thomson (who became a life long friend) and himself in 1917 becoming the first forest apprentices in Western Australia (W.A.); his early training and how they were taught to respect the worth of the old growth forests by Poole; spending the first 18 months at the Hamel Forest nursery gaining the skills of a nurseryman.
Perry speaks of spending more than 2 years in a forest assessment camp surveying the Jarrah & Karri forests of the south west; the emotional & almost "spiritual" affect the old growth forests had on individuals; his observations on the operations of the saw millers; inspecting a pine plantation in South Australia in 1923; opting to grow seedlings rather than be involved in the cutting & utilisation of native forests; how Western Australia took on the challenge of growing its own softwood plantations; the determined efforts by the Foresters over a long period to get the Karri & Jarrah on a sustained yield basis; his concerns over the threat to the jarrah forests posed by bauxite mining and the tree felling policies of the Forestry Dept; his view that political pressure from the Greenies preserved what was left of the Karri and Jarrah forests.
