The Hundred of Selwyn was the only Hundred gazetted in the mining area north of Pine Creek in the County of Rosebery in March, 1885. It was named after the eminent Somerset geologist Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn, who was appointed Director of the Geological Survey in Victoria in 1851. The County of Rosebery and the Hundred of Selwyn lapsed with the passage in 1976 and subsequent assent of the Crown Lands Ordinace 1976 (No 1 of 1977) and the Crown Lands (Validation of Proclamations) Ordinance 1976 (No.2 of 1977).
A mining town of some 316 lots was surveyed by the S A Government and Gazetted on 30 October 1884 as the second town of the Territory after Palmerston (Darwin). It was centred on a railway reserve on the line between Palmerston (Darwin) and Pine Creek some 12 miles to the south. The Overland Telegraph Line staff were based there, as was a police station, a circuit court and a hospital. This town survived until the turn of the century when mining development waned. Some 25 remnant freehold titles have survived and provide a land tenure record to those who held land at Burrundie.
