Summary

MS 5630 comprises correspondence, diaries, writing, music material and copies of scores including "Petra", "12 magical preludes", "Bagatelles for Petra", "A Whitman cycle", "Fall of the House of Usher", piano reduction, "Footprints in the snow", and "Fiery tales: a comic opera in one act", with libretto by Gwen Harwood, 1975 (102 boxes, 34 fol. boxes, 2 elephant folios).

The Acc07.147 instalment comprises correspondence, music manuscripts and reel-to-reel tapes (22 boxes, 13 cartons, 1 fol. box, 4 large cartons).

The Acc08.035 instalment consists of audio cassette tapes containing recordings of Sitsky's compositions (many by Australian performers), performances of other composers' works by Sitsky himself, including piano works by Busoni, and radio programmes featuring Sitsky's works (1 box).

The Acc11.117 instalment includes correspondence, posters, programs, proofs of music scores and books. Also includes early poetry, prose and manuscripts of writings by Sitsky (16 boxes, 2 fol. boxes).

Biography/History

Composer, musicologist, pianist, teacher and writer. Larry Sitsky was born in Tientsin, China in 1934, and came to Australia in 1951. He studied at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music, and after graduating in 1954 continued his piano studies with Winifred Burston and later in the United States with Egon Petri. On his return to Australia, Sitsky took up positions at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and the University of Queensland. From 1966 he has held various posts at the Canberra School of Music, Australian National University, including head of keyboard studies and head of the Department of Composition. Since 1994 he has held a personal chair.

He was awarded a Myer Foundation Research Grant to write a book on Ferruccio Busoni. A self-taught composer, Sitsky's major works include: "Fantasia for piano" (1962); opera, "Fall of the House of Usher" (1965); "Apparitions" (1966); "Concerto for two pianos" (1967); "String quartet" (1969); opera, "Lenz" (1970); "De profundis epistola" (1982); opera, "Golem" (1993); "Violin concerto no. 4: the dreaming" (1997); "Trio for two cellos and piano: Enochian sonata" (1999); and, "Symphony in four movements" (2001).
