- Biography/History:
-
Marine engineer. Norman Charles Macdonald was the son of John and Jane (nee Halley) Macdonald. He had an older brother, Halley (born 1876), a sister, "Nina" (1877) and a younger brother, Colin (1885); another sister and brother had died as infants. Macdonald's father died in around 1892 and his mother opened a guest house, "Wallawa" at Lawson in the Blue Mountains (NSW). After his father's death, Macdonald lived with his aunts in Sydney until 1905, when he left and worked on ships in order to gain qualifications in marine engineering. When ashore, he would work in ship building and ship repair yards.
